2018 GSC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2018 women’s basketball all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Union’s
Chelsey Shumpert has been named the GSC Player of the Year. West Alabama’s
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett has been named the GSC Freshman of the Year, while Union’s
Mark Campbell has been named GSC Coach of the Year.
Shumpert is the second player from Union to ever claim the league’s top individual honor. The graduate transfer led the league in scoring, finishing the regular season averaging 24.8 points per game, more than 6.0 ppg higher than second place. That mark also ranked second in all of Division II. Shumpert was named the league’s player of the week 10 times in 15 weeks. She also led the regular season champions in rebounds. She led the league in three-point field goal percentage, finished fifth in field goal percentage, sixth in assists, and third in steals.
Garrett-Hammett is the first Tiger to be named GSC Freshman of the Year since 2003. She was named GSC Freshman of the Week six times during the season. Her 14.1 points per game led West Alabama and ranked ninth in the conference. Garrett-Hammett also finished eighth in the league in rebounds, averaging 8.3 boards per game. She was one of only three people in the league to finish in the top 10 in both points per game and rebounds per game.
Campbell has now been named GSC Coach of the Year three of the past four seasons. Not coincidentally, this year, he led the Lady Bulldogs to their third regular season championship in four years. Union enters the GSC Championship with a 25-3 mark, including an 18-2 record in conference games. In 19 years as head coach at UU, Campbell has amassed the outstanding record of 579-89.
