Track Athlete of the Year
Shorter sophomore Lester Miller has been named the 2017 GSC Track Athlete of the Year.

Miller posted the fastest time this season in both the 100m dash (10.28) and the 200m dash (20.85), and he was also a member of the GSC record setting 4x100 relay squad from Shorter. Miller took home titles in the 100m dash and the 4x100 relay while adding a second place finish in the 200m dash at the GSC Conference Championships this past weekend. The talented sprinter's 100m time has secured him an automatic spot in the 2017 NCAA DII National Championships, while his 200m provisional time should secure him a spot in that race as well. In each of the three events mentioned, Miller is ranked in the top five nationally. The Shorter Hawk was awarded GSC Track Performer of the Week twice this season.

Field Athlete of the Year
Alabama Huntsville standout Devin Jones has been named the 2017 GSC Field Athlete of the year.

This season, Jones competed in the decathlon, where he finished second with an NCAA DII Provisional mark of 6499. Jones jumped a conference-leading 2.05m in the high jump to give him an NCAA Provisional Mark. He won the high jump at the conference meet and was named the GSC's Most Outstanding Overall Athlete at the meet.

Freshman of the Year (Three Way Tie):
Mississippi College’s Luke Govero, Alabama Huntsville’s Zach Hancock, and Lee’s Christian Noble have all been named 2017 GSC Freshmen of the Year.

Govero secured the conference title in the decathlon by scoring a conference best, and NCAA DII Provisional Mark, of 6859 points. Hancock took home titles in the discus and the shot put, while securing a third place finish in the hammer throw. Noble earned victories in the 5k and the 3000m steeplechase, along with a runner-up finish behind his teammate in the 1500m race.

Coach of the Year:
Alabama Huntsville Coach David Cain has been named the 2017 GSC Coach of the Year.

Cain coached his men’s team to a convincing 2017 GSC Championship at the conference meet last weekend. Throughout the season, the Huntsville native coached multiple athletes to NCAA DII Provisional Marks, along with one to an NCAA DII Automatic Mark. This is Cain's 19th season as Head Coach. He has received GSC Coach of the Year honors five time before this.
