Around the GSC
The 2016 GSC Volleyball regular season is in the books as six teams turn their attention to postseason play. The conference tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and will conclude with the crowning of a champion on Sunday, Nov. 20.
Valdosta State will travel to regionally ranked North Alabama on Tuesday for first round action. The third-seeded Lions and sixth-seeded Blazers split the regular season series 1-1, both capturing straight set victories. UNA hopes to move past VSU and continue its journey towards a second consecutive conference title. Meanwhile, the Blazers will look to add to past tournament success and return to the championship game for the first time since defeating UNA in 2014.
The VSU-UNA winner will move on to the semi-finals against the No. 2-seed Shorter Hawks.
The other first round game will feature Lee and Christian Brothers. The Lady Flames will travel to Memphis for their first ever GSC Tournament appearance. Christian Brothers defeated Lee in both matches this season, but the Flames are playing well winning seven of their last 11, including victories over West Florida and Valdosta State.
The winner of Lee and CBU will move on to play the top seed West Florida in the semis, hosted by the Argos.
GSC All-Conference Teams and yearly awards were also announced this week. On Monday, 18 student-athletes were selected to the All-GSC First and Second Teams. North Alabama and West Florida led the league with five All-GSC selections each.
UNA outside hitter Natasha Fomina was named the GSC Player of the Year while Christian Brothers outside hitter Emma Lenoir was selected as the GSC Freshman of the Year. CBU added another honor as 14-year veteran In-Sik Hwang was tabbed as the GSC Coach of the Year for the third time.
