Union claims crown at GSC Cross Country Championship

NEW MARKET, Ala. - Union claimed its second GSC Women's Cross Country Championship and its first since 2014 on Saturday. It was the closest race at the GSC Women's Cross Country Championship since 2007. Union tallied 61 points, just one point better than second place Lee with 62 points.
The Bulldogs were led by junior Janey Berends who placed fourth overall in the 5K with a time of 18:52.51. Union had three others finish in the top 15, including Amy McKelvey, Rebecca Tankersley and Amanda Leatherwood.
The individual champion was Lee's Audrey Smith. Smith completed the race with a time 18:11.86. She was followed in the top five by last year's champion Cecelia David of West Alabama, Valdosta State's Tyra Holloway, Berends and Shorter's Leah Sikorski.
