GSC Adds Men's and Women's Track & Field

Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference will sponsor two new more spring sports for the 2015-16 season, as the league officially announced that it will be adding men's and women's track and field to its sponsorship list.
The GSC Presidents agreed to move forward with the addition of men's and women's track and field at its annual business meeting this past June, upping the number of sponsored sports to 16.
"Track & Field is a natural extension of the GSC’s sport sponsorship portfolio," GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson said. “With eight women’s teams and six men’s teams, we will have depth and quality at our championships. We are grateful for Mississippi College and Shorter being willing to share hosting responsibilities for the GSC Championships the next four years. Their venues will help make a great experience for our student-athletes."
For 2015-16, GSC Track and Field will be classified as an "emerging sport" which allows its members to compete for an Invitational Championship. Conference by-laws require that a at least six member institutions must sponsor a sport before it can become an official league Championship. The GSC expects both men's and women's track and field to meet the six-member requirement in 2016-17 when Mississippi College earns official status and Alabama Huntsville and Shorter complete their affiliate requirements with the Peach Belt Conference.
The 2016 GSC Men's and Women's Track and Field Invitational Championship will be held April 21-23 at Mississippi College. Visit
