GSC ANNOUNCES 2014 SPRING ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference proudly announces its 2014 Spring Sports All-Academic Team.
                Forty-four student-athletes, including five three-time selections and 12 other repeat members were honored: baseball (11), men’s golf (5), women’s golf (5), softball (11), men’s tennis (6) and women’s tennis (6).
                The Spring All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominated student-athletes must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

BASEBALL
                The GSC Baseball All-Academic Team is headlined by three-time returning members: Alabama Huntsville senior starting pitcher Drew Eiland and Delta State senior outfielder Jordan Chovanec.  The duo were also two of the four members of the this year’s squad to earn unanimous selections along with DSU senior outfield Dex Herrington and West Alabama sophomore designated hitter Mitch Holgate.
                UAH and DSU each collected three overall student-athletes as senior second baseman Kasey Hinton closed out Delta State’s trio of honorees and senior shortstop Blake Massey and junior pitcher Luke Mould completed Alabama Huntsville’s list.  Rounding out the Baseball contingent were North Alabama junior starting pitcher Brantley Claunch, Valdosta State sophomore third baseman Michael Gouge, West Florida senior third baseman Jeremy Bajdaun and West Georgia graduate Galen Smith.
 
MEN’S GOLF
                The GSC Men’s Golf All-Academic Team is led by West Florida senior Gary Buffington III and West Georgia junior Kevin Clarke who are back from 2013.  Christian Brothers led all schools with two honorees.  Junior Andrew Aristorenas was the lone member to post a perfect. 4.00 G.P.A., while senior Kyle Johnson completed CBU’s duo.  Delta State junior Jack Byrd completed the five-member squad.
 
WOMEN’S GOLF
                West Florida dominated the Women’s Golf All-Academic Team, placing four honorees for the second consecutive year.  Back from last year’s squad are juniors Daisy-May Kenny, Elin Olsson and Camila Sevillano.  All three also earned First Team All-GSC laurels in 2014 and Olsson was tabbed the GSC Player of the Year.  Sophomore Fanny Starzmann rounded out UWF’s list of winners, while West Georgia senior Jaime Jordon completed the team.
 
SOFTBALL
                Valdosta State and Delta State led the way on the 11-member All-Academic Softball Team, placing three honorees a piece.  The squad also features two three-time selections and one student-athlete with 4.00 grade-point average.
                Alabama Huntsville senior outfielder Mary Kelly and VSU senior pitcher Brianna Hancock posted their third consecutive All-Academic laurel, while four other student-athletes returned from 2013: Christian Brothers’ third baseman Marie Joiner, North Alabama outfielder Shelby Goodman and Valdosta State’s Courtney Albritton and Fran Johnson.  Albritton and Goodman were also unanimous selections along with UNA sophomore Harlie Barkley.  Johnson was the only player with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.
                Completing the squad were the DSU trio of Memrie Corley, Taylor Holland and Kassidy Tally and West Alabama’s Rebecca Schick.
 
MEN’S TENNIS
                The Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team features two returning players, two unanimous selections and two student-athletes with 4.00 grade-point averages. 
                Back from 2013 are West Alabama senior Anton Ivanova and West Florida junior Elio LatellaAlabama Huntsville senior Fredrik Graaner joined UWF senior Tony Rajaobelina as unanimous picks and Graaner also ended his career with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. along with Delta State’s Guillaume Lacour.  Complete the squad was UWA’s second honoree: senior Nestor Vargas.
 
WOMEN’S TENNIS
                The 2014 six-member Women’s Tennis All-Academic squad is highlighted by one three-time selection, one returning standout and three unanimous selections.  Valdosta State’s Michelle Fischer earned her third consecutive designation, while West Florida junior Fernanda Amaral is back from 2013.  Fisher and Amaral were also unanimous picks along with Alabama Huntsville junior Katie Bryant who was also the squad’s lone 4.00 G.P.A. player.
                Completing the squad is UAH senior Jessica Groupierre, North Alabama senior Bruna Vieira and West Alabama senior Dasha Popova.
 
GSC HONOR ROLL
                West Alabama leads all schools with 52 Spring Academic Honor Roll student-athletes, followed by future member Shorter (49) and West Georgia and future member Lee which tied at 45.  Delta State (44) rounded out the Top Five, followed by and Valdosta State (41), West Florida (39) and future member Union (36).  Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama each notched 33 members, while Christian Brothers (30) closed out the Honor Roll list. A minimum grade point average of 3.00 is required. Qualification for this particular honor is automatic based on GPA and nomination (there is no vote).
