Complete Release  --  GSC Honor Roll

Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference proudly announces its 2013-14 GSC Winter Sports All-Academic Teams.  A total of 10 student-athletes were selected, including three returning members and two standouts with 4.00 grade-point-averages.
The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote.  Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service.  SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member.  The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport.  Ties are not broken.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:

Christian Brothers headlines the 2013-14 GSC Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team, providing three of the five members.  Junior guard Trey Casey is back from last year after becoming a unanimous selection for the second year in a row.  Casey held on to his perfect 4.00 grade-point-average this year, while posting First Team All-GSC laurels as well.  Senior guard Cory McArthy also earned his second consecutive Academic honor, while sophomore guard/forward Drew Hildreth completed the Bucs’ trio.
Delta State guard Jack Madgen is the second of two sophomores on the squad, while North Alabama forward Wes Long wrapped up his career with his first-ever award.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:
North Alabama leads the way on this year’s GSC Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team as the lone school with multiple members.  Junior guard Lauren Faris returns from last year by becoming the squad’s lone unanimous selection after collecting Second Team All-GSC honors as well.  Joining Faris on the team is its lone sophomore, UNA guard Jennifer Towne.
Alabama Huntsville guard Jordan Smith completes her career with her first Academic honor after posting First Team All-GSC laurels this year.  Christian Brothers guard Erica Burgess turned in a stellar season on the court and in the classroom, graduating with a 4.00 GPA while earning her master’s degree and also posting Second Team All-GSC honors.  Rounding out the All-Academic Team is Delta State junior guard Rhandi Ball who collected her first-ever selection.

HONOR ROLL:
Future member Lee University led the way on the Winter Academic Honor Roll, placing 18 student-athletes, while Alabama Huntsville and Provisional members Shorter and Union added 16 apiece.
Christian Brothers and North Alabama each provided 13 members, followed by nine by Delta State and West Florida.  Peach State rivals Valdosta State and West Georgia tied with eight designees and West Alabama completed the list with three.  Qualification for the Honor Roll is automatic (there is no vote) and is based on a minimum 3.00 overall grade-point average.
