Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference is proud to announce its All-GSC Men’s Basketball honors for the 2013-14 season.
All eight GSC schools landed at least one player on the post-season list, led by West Alabama which garnered three overall winners, including one First Teamer and two Second Teamers.  Delta State was the only other school to post multiple honorees on the First Team.  Christian Brothers and North Alabama completed the First Team, while Alabama Huntsville, Valdosta State, West Florida and West Georgia rounded out the Second Team.

DSU’S READUS NAMED GSC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
DSU forward Willie Readus was selected the GSC Player of the Year, becoming the first Statesmen to win the honor since Phil Turner finished first in the voting in 2010-11.  The senior enters this week’s GSC Tournament ranked No. 1 in the league in rebounding (11.0), No. 2 in scoring (19.5) and No. 10 in free throw percentage (.762—170-223).  The Morton, MS native also leads the GSC in double-doubles, notching 16 in 28 games this season, and he was recognized as the GSC Player of the Week twice.

DSU’S SCHMIDT TABBED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Delta State forward Devin Schmidt was named the GSC Freshman of the Year, marking the school’s first honoree since 2006-07 when Chad Atkins shared the laurel.  Schmidt was also named to the All-GSC First Team, becoming just the second player in Conference history to earn Freshman of the Year and First Team recognition in the same season, following former Arkansas-Monticello’s Billy McDaniel in 2002-03.
The Sevierville, TN native enters the post-season ranked third in the league in assists (4.00) and free throw percentage (.841—95-113), seventh in field goal percentage (.527—148-281), eighth in three-point percentage (.400—32-80), ninth in scoring (15.7) and 10th in rebounding (5.9).

DSU’S BOONE IS THE GSC COACH OF THE YEAR
Jim Boone became the first Delta State head coach to win GSC Coach of the Year since Steve Rives in 2006.  Boone celebrated his second season in Cleveland by leading the Statesmen to the GSC Regular Season Title and first 20-win season since 2008-09.  Delta State is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Regional Poll and seeks its first GSC Crown since 2006 and first NCAA South Regional berth since 2009.

ALL-GSC TEAM OVERVIEW
Only one player returns to the All-GSC Team when North Alabama guard Rashaun Claiborne jumped to this year’s First Team after garnering Second Team laurels a year ago.  Delta State added two on the First Team as forward Willie Readus and forward Devin Schmidt represented the Green-and-White.  Rounding out the First Team is Christian Brothers guard Trey Casey and West Alabama guard Desmond Raymond
UWA leads the Second Team by notching two winners: guard/forward Sandy Underwood and guard/forward Jarell Byrd.  Completing the Second Team was Alabama Huntsville guard Wayne Dedrick, Valdosta State forward David Murray, West Florida guard/forward Nate Johnson and West Georgia freshman guard Deonta Stocks.
