West Florida Wins Sixth Straight GSC Volleyball Title
Pensacola, Fla. -- Winning one championship isn't easy. Winning five straight it much tougher. But it took an extraordinary effort from West Florida to nab a sixth straight GSC volleyball title Sunday afternoon at the UWF Fieldhouse.
The Argonauts (26-7) dropped the first two sets to West Georgia before launching a furious rally that saw UWF take the final three sets to win the title and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II South Region tournament.
Lindsay Homme earned tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after finishing with a 23 kills and hitting .553 in a winning effort.
The Wolves (17-14), who still have an outside chance of making the tourney, looked well on their way to securing their second title and stopping the Argos' title run. They took the first set 28-26 and won the second set 25-21, hitting .436 as a team. But from there, West Florida came alive and shut down the UWG offensive attack.
The Argonauts were dominant in taking the third (25-8) and fourth (25-12) sets, hitting .407 as a team while holding the Wolves to -.104 hitting. The third set was especially difficult for UWG, making 12 errors and hitting -.206.
The teams traded points early in the fifth set but three critical service errors by the Wolves were part of the run that allowed the Argonauts to close out the match 15-10 in the fifth set. A kill by
Abby Timmer (25 assists, five kills, two solo blocks) clinched the title.
Amanda Miles (18 kills, .412 hitting percentage) led the Wolves, who also got excellent performances from
Emily Reul (12 kills, 16 digs),
Amanda Miller (49 assists, 15 digs) and
Lesley Bemis (10 kills, three blocks). The Argonauts were paced by

Sierra Hansen (31 assists) and
