West Florida Paces All-GSC Volleyball Team
Birmingham, Ala. — The 2013 Gulf South Conference volleyball regular season has concluded and the best players in the conference have been chosen for this year’s All-GSC teams.
Players were selected for the First or Second Team by vote of the league coaches. In all, 15 players were picked with GSC regular season champion
West Florida leading the way with four honorees.
West Georgia had three selections,
Alabama Huntsville,
Christian Brothers and
Valdosta State each added two and
North Alabama and
West Alabama both had one honoree.
Six players were previous members of the All-GSC team, including three-time First Team selections
Autumn Duyn and
Lindsay Homme of West Florida. Seniors led the way with seven selections (four on the First Team), juniors followed with five, sophomores had two and just one freshman was selected.
Below are the winners of the individual honors, including Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
UWF’S HOMME WINS SECOND CAREER PLAYER OF THE YEAR HONOR
West Florida middle hitter Lindsay Homme earned the GSC
Player of the Year award. This marks her second top player honor, adding to the one she earned in 2011, and makes her the fifth player in league history to win multiple awards. She is one of four players in school history selected as Player of the Year and gives the Argonauts five consecutive players to bring home the honor. She won five Player of the Week awards (two Offensive and three Defensive), including one week when she won the top offensive and defensive honor, as the Argonauts won the regular season title and top seed in the GSC Tournament.
Homme currently leads the GSC in blocks per set (1.04) and total blocks (113) and also ranks fifth in the GSC in attacking percentage (.277), fourth in points per set (3.60) and seventh in kills per set (2.80). She has two matches with 10 blocks – a league high this season – and set the all-time record for career blocks at UWF.
CBU’S COOPER EARNS FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Christian Brothers outside hitter Brinsley Cooper was named GSC
Freshman of the Year. She is the second straight Lady Buccaneer to earn the award and third overall. Cooper earned one GSC Offensive Player of the Week award this season and leads the GSC in hitting percentage (.338). The rookie had a season-high 19 kills against West Alabama, had 12 matches with double-digit kills and hit at least .350 in 13 matches, including a season-high .857 against Lyon. Cooper currently has 254 kills and 52 blocks (seven solo) on the season.
VSU’S SWAN EARNS COACH OF THE YEAR
Valdosta State head coach Mike Swan was named winner of the
Coach of the Year Award. In his first season, Swan becomes the first VSU coach to win the award. The Blazers have gone 19-13 this season – the most wins for VSU since 2010 - 10-8 in GSC play, and have earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament. Swan won 12 of his first 14 games at VSU, including a season-high seven-match win streak, which is the third-longest in the league this season.
