West Florida Sweeps GSC All-Sports Trophy Honors
Complete Release
Birmingham, AL—For the third time in school history, the University of West Florida swept Gulf South Conference Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy accolades.
UWF took home both awards for the second time in six years after also sweeping in 2006-07. This season marks the 30th year that the GSC has designated a Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy Champion during the same academic season. Nine schools have swept accolades since 1982-83, led by former member Jacksonville State which earned both awards four times.
West Florida wrapped up its GSC-record seventh consecutive Women’s All-Sports Trophy, ninth in the last 10 years. In fact, UWF’s consecutive streak is the longest by any school in Men’s or Women’s All-Sports Trophy history. The Argonauts also celebrated their 10th overall trophy, headlined by Conference Championships in Cross Country, Volleyball, Golf and Tennis. West Florida collected 37.5 points, while Valdosta State placed second with 32.0 points. North Alabama finished in third place with 30.5 points, while Alabama-Huntsville (30.0) was the only other school to reach the 30-point mark. Rounding out the rankings were West Alabama (29.5), Delta State (23.0), West Georgia (17.0) and Christian Brothers (14.5).
West Florida completed the sweep, winning its first GSC Men's All-Sports Trophy since 2006-07 and fourth overall honor. UWF claimed the Men’s Tennis Title and posted second-place efforts in Cross Country, Soccer and Golf. The Argonauts compiled 33.5 points, topping second-place Alabama-Huntsville which tallied 27.0 points. Delta State ranked third (23.0) and North Alabama (21.0) also earned at least 20 points. Three teams tied for fifth-place via 19.5 points (Christian Brothers, Valdosta State and West Georgia), while West Alabama (16.5) completed the final results.
The Conference will present the All-Sports Trophies at its Annual Awards Banquet, Monday, June 25th, at the Hilton Birmingham/Perimeter Park in Birmingham, AL. At that time, the GSC will also recognize its "Top Ten" student-athletes and reveal the winners of the Commissioner's Trophies (presented to the most outstanding male and female student-athlete, based on athletic, academic and extracurricular/community service criteria).
