Valdosta State Wins Fourth Consecutive GSC Softball Tournament Title
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Valdosta State jumped on Delta State early and followed the play of the Gulf South Conference's top players this season - freshman outfielder Courtney Albrittton and senior pitcher Alanna Hadley - to defeat Delta State 9-1 in six innings and earn its fourth consecutive GSC Softball Tournament title at Greenbrook Softball Complex.
The Blazers (48-3), the No. 1 seed in the tournament, scored three in the top of the first inning. Ashley Steinhilber had the big blow, a two-run single, that put the Lady Statesmen (29-31) in an early hole. Albritton, the GSC Freshman and Player of the Year - would add a solo home run in the second to open a 4-0 advatage.
That would be plenty for Hadley, the GSC Pitcher of the Year. She pitched a complete-game four-hitter, allowing just one run - on a Taylor Holland sacrifice fly. That made the score 4-1 but VSU would pile on to end the game by the 8-run rule. Albritton and Morgan Johnson added RBI in the fourth, Clare Wamsley added a solo homer in the sixth as part of a 3-run frame, and Hadley finished DSU off in the sixth inning to clinch the title.
