CBU Men’s Soccer Team Wins Gulf South Conference Championship
Pensacola, FL – The Christian Brothers University men’s soccer team claimed the Gulf South Conference Championship defeating Delta State University 5-1 at Brosnaham Park on Sunday.
Christian Brothers and Delta State took to the pitch on Sunday morning in the first championship match of the day.
Michael Hollier started the scoring for CBU. He punched in the first goal of the match, putting his team up 1-0 in the 6
th minute.
Thirteen minutes later, Jose Ferraz increased the lead to 2-0 when he scored on an assist from Nico Alvarez-Garcia.
DSU got on the board in the 26
th minute when Sebastian Ridout scored on the assist from the free kick by Steven Simmons.
In the second half, Matt Derise scored in the 69
th minute, assisted by Tony Aloia, pushing the score to 3-1 at that point.
CBU added another score in the 74
th minute when Neil Cummings scored on a header, opposite post, from Tony Aloia and Matt Derise.
DSU’s Caue Da Silva and Simmons were sent off with eight minutes to go in the second half as both men received a yellow card twice in the match, resulting in a red card. The result, CBU added yet another score in the 87
th minute. William McAllister recorded the score.
Christian Brothers closed out the season with an 11-7-1 record. This marks the third championship in CBU men’s soccer history, as this is also its second-consecutive conference title.
