GSC Announces This Week's Baseball Honorees, March 22

EAST DIVISION

North Alabama starting pitcher Trey Mitchell (SR, 6-3, 185, Florence, AL) 

Mitchell records his second award of the season and fourth of his career. The senior guided UNA to a 10-0 shutout in Saturday’s series opener at Valdosta State, striking out six batters in his fourth complete game of the season. The Florence, AL native hurled nine innings, allowing just one extra-base hit and walking one batter. The win moved Mitchell to 6-1 on the season.

West Florida third baseman/outfielder Dustin Lawley (SR, 6-0, 190, Bessemer, AL)

Lawley earns his second career laurel and is the second UWF winner in three weeks. The senior led the Argonauts to a 6-0 week, posting a .450 average and a 1.050 slugging percentage. Lawley went 9-for-20 for the week and hit multiple times in four games, while hitting three homeruns, one double, one triple and seven RBI. The Bessemer, AL native accounted for three RBI thanks to one triple and one homerun in an 8-6 triumph over Division I Mississippi Valley State. Next, he led UWF to a series sweep of West Georgia, going 2-for-3 in the first and third games.

 

WEST DIVISION

 

Harding starting pitcher Brodie Brumley (SR, 6-1, 225, Scottsboro, AL)

Brumley is the second straight HU pitcher to claim honors, recording his first-ever honor after turning in a dominate performance in a 4-0 shutout of Christian Brothers. The senior threw all seven innings for the Bisons, striking out nine batters and scattering two singles. The Scottsboro, AL native became the first pitcher this season to shutout CBU and his nine strikeouts were one short of his career high.

 

Southern Arkansas catcher Brandon Choate (SR, 6-0, 205, Hooks, TX)

Choate is the second consecutive SAU honoree, taking home his first-ever award after leading the Muleriders’ offense in their 3-2 week. The senior was 6-for-15, hitting safely in all but one game, while slugging for a 1.200 percentage behind four homeruns. He also drove in nine RBI, scored five runs and drew four walks. The Hooks, TX native blasted two homers in a 10-9 win over William Carey and he capped the week with his final homerun and four RBI in a series-clinching, 14-4 triumph over Henderson State.
