GSC Announces Baseball Weekly Accolades, March 1

EAST DIVISION

West Florida starting pitcher Ben Hawkins (JR, 6-0, 180, Rome, GA) is the Gulf South Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week for the week ending February 27th.

Hawkins is UWF’s second straight Pitcher award winner. The junior used a career-high strikeout effort to hurl a complete-game, shutout victory over then No. 2 Florida Southern. The Rome, GA native did not walk a batter and allowed just four hits in seven innings of work, headlined by 10 strikeouts. His effort helped the Argonauts clinch the series versus FSC before UWF completed the three-game sweep the next day.
North Alabama shortstop Josh Carpenter (FR, 6-0, 170, Harvest, AL) is this week's Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week for the week ending February 27th.
Carpenter is the third consecutive UNA honoree. The freshman shortstop led the Lions to a 2-2 record including a series victory over Southern Arkansas. The Harvest, AL native hit for a .667 average along with a .917 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base figure. Carpenter hit safely in each contest, going 8-for-12 with three doubles, three RBI and two walks. He was a perfect four-for-four in a 13-3 win over SAU, roping one double and notching three RBI and three runs scored.

WEST DIVISION

Southern Arkansas starting pitcher Dan Bream (SR, 6-6, 185, Coldwater, MI) is the Gulf South Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week for the week ending February 27th.

Bream collects his second consecutive accolade after tossing his second straight complete-game shutout. The senior helped SAU rebound from a loss to North Alabama with a 12-0 victory. He threw his fourth all-time complete game and second career shutout, going 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and fanning 10 batters. The Coldwater, MI native retired the first six batters he faced and then sat down 10 straight in order.

Arkansas-Monticello outfielder Wayne Hawkins (JR, 6-0, 205, Memphis, TN) is the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Week for the week ending February 27th.

Hawkins records the second honor of his career, first this season, leading UAM to a four-game series split versus Missouri S&T. The junior batted .667 and slugged for a 1.083 percentage in 12 at bats, while racking up eight total hits. He laced two doubles and one homerun, en route to seven RBI and six runs scored. The Memphis, TN native was perfect on the base paths, stealing four bases on four attempts. He went four-for-four in the 12-6 opening series win, collecting six RBI led by two-run homer.
