Pensacola, FLChristian Brothers University returned to the top of the Gulf South Conference Men’s Soccer world Sunday at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, FL.

No. 1 seed CBU (15-3-1) and No. 3 seed West Florida (9-6-3) battled to a scoreless tie for 110 minutes before the Buccaneers clipped the Argonauts in penalty kick action, 5-4.  The match marked just the second overtime decision in GSC Tournament history since 2005 when Lincoln Memorial also needed a 5-4 penalty kick advantage to top Central Arkansas.

West Florida outshot Christian Brothers, 13-9, but neither squad could find the back of the net.  UWF earned a one-man edge in the second overtime when CBU’s Matt Derise collected his second yellow card of the match, but the Argos could not take advantage.

Both teams were successful in their first two penalty kicks, but UWF opened the door after CBU keeper Daniel Johnson stopped Junior Prevalus’ attempt.  The Buccaneers did not let up, capped by the game-winning kick by Jose Ferraz on the final attempt.

Christian Brothers captured just its second GSC Men’s Soccer Crown, first since 2000, and it was sweet revenge for the Bucs who lost to UWF in last year’s final.

CBU’s Ferraz was named the Most Outstanding Player, while teammates Sean Rutter, David Skull and Jaime Garcia joined him on the All-Tournament Team.  Other All-Tournament members included UWF’s Junior Prevalus, James Moore, Sean Reynolds and Matthew Aldred, Alabama-Huntsville’s Felix Hjalmarsson and Jarrod Muggleton and Harding’s Austin Brown and Jackson Savage.

Christian Brothers entered the Tournament ranked No. 1 in the South Region and the Buccaneers expect to earn hosting honors in next weekend’s NCAA Tournament.  The NCAA participants will officially be announced Monday night on ncaa.com.
